Could you fill in some details.
What are yor recording from, what sort of sound card, how are your headphones connected, what settings do you have in "Edit menu > Preferences > Devices" and "Edit menu > Preferences > Quality", have you tried updating the sound card drivers, any other information that may be relevant?

I am using a line 6 pod X3 via USB for recording my guitars. It plugs into through USB. I am not to sure of my laptops sound card but the make and model of it is:
Aspire 5742-6846
Model: PEW71
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
I have never encountered this problem on my old laptop which runned on Vista, but that one was recently broke.
Audacity Preferences
'Edit menu>preferences>devices'
INTERFACE
host: MME
Using: PortAudio V19-devel (built Mar 29 2010 21:03:06)
PLAYBACK
device: Microsoft Sound Mapper - Output (this is my line 6 pod X3)
RECORDING
Device: Mocrosoft Sound Mapper - Input (this is my line 6 pod X3)
Channels: 1(Mono)
'Edit menu>preferences>quality'
SAMPLING
Default Sample Rate: 44100 Hz
Default Sample Format: 32-bit float
REAL-TIME CONVERSION
Sample Rate Converter: Fast Sinc Interpolation
Dither: None
HIGH-QUALITY CONVERSION
Sample Rate Converter: High-quality Sinc Interpolation
Dither: Shaped
I am not too sure If I updated my sound card but I am pretty sure they are up to date this being a brand new laptop for about 2 weeks.
hopefully this information helps.

Check in the "Setting Windows® to use your Line 6 hardware as the Default Audio Device" section of the Pod user manual and ensure that the Windows Control Panel sound card settings are set at the same sample rate as Audacity. Try both 44.1 kHz (44100 Hz) and 48 kHz (you may find that one works better than the other, in which case use the one that works best).
