Not recording

The answer is probably right in front of me,but I'm not seeing it.
When I go to record a new project,...quite simply the line in the track box does not move.I have tried all I know.I can play back music files fine..but record...?????
Pls advise as to what action to take 'step-by-step' to eliminate this extremely frustrating ordeal.

Go to the Transport menu and if you have "Sound Activated Recording" ON turn it OFF.
Include as much details as you can in your post (Audacity version, Operating System, Equipment used, etc).
Please post your question in the appropriate forum (regarding audacity version and operating system).
