recording from turntable with iMic, sound too low to use

I'm doing something wrong. I was using a Griffin Technology PowerWave as an interface between my Kenwood turntable and my computer, and it gave me sound, but at about half the necessary volume to record. Intermittently, it worked better, but most of the time it was too low. Thinking it was the equipment, I bought a new Griffin iMic2, and it does exactly the same thing, plugged into a USB port. The sound is there, but with the volume controls through the mic setting maxed it's too low. It isn't the computer's volume controls--I checked that. Should I somehow be using the line input on the iMic? I don't see how to do that, since the only Audacity option I get is an iMic mic input? I'm sure someone understands this better than I do. The iMic is USB-only. Would it work better if I plugged the turntable into an amplifier and used the line outs? I tried that with the PowerWave and it didn't work.
