Sound drops after 2 seconds

Hello All,
I am new to Audacity and to audio recording. Your patience is greatly appreciated.

I'm trying to record a talk show off of satellite radio. I have a Stiletto 2 that I record the show on at night. I am then connecting the headphone jack of the Stiletto to the mic jack of an Asus laptop. When playing the original recording it sounds perfect through the laptop's speakers or headphones connected to the laptop.
I installed Audacity 1.3.12 beta on my Asus G71G running 64-bit Windows 7. I did the walk through and set up my devices, recording, quality, and adjusted my levels.
When I start the playback and recording everything looks right. When I play back the new recording the quality is a little lower. I'm OK with this, if I have to be. The big problem is that after two seconds it seems to activate some sort of filter or something. The beginning of the show has music in the background and the host talking in the foreground. The fist two seconds are good, but after that it tries to filter out the background music and takes some of the foreground voice with it.

I'm sure there is probably some easy answer for this, but I have not been able to find it. I've spend the past five hours changing settings and reading the wiki and forums.

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

Windows is trying to help you and getting it wrong.
Go into the Windows Control Panel and find the "Sounds" section.
Go to the "Recording" tab, and select the recording input that you are using.
Open the "Properties" of that recording device and search thoroughly through the settings.
Turn off all effects and enhancements.

Topic moved to the Audacity 1.3 part of the forum.

THANK YOU ... THANK YOU ... THANK YOU

That was it exactly!
I see, windows was treating it like a microphone and trying to cut out background noise. That was nice of it.
It is working perfectly now.
Thank you so much!
