Vocal recording delay

Hey guys. My name is Miranda. I am new to Audacity, so forgive me if my question seems trivial. Everything is working fine up until I try to record vocals over an audio track. Every time I sing, there is a one/two second delay to the vocals. Like I will start singing, but on playback everything sounds late by about a second or so. Aim extremely confused and a bit frustrated. So ANY help would be greatly appreciated!!!! Thanks :)

Turn off "Software Playthrough" (near bottom of the Transport menu).
If you're using a USB microphone, then unfortunately that will mean that you will not be able to monitor your voice through the headphones while you are recording (it's a limitation of most USB microphones). If you're using a conventional microphone plugged directly into the computer, it is usually possible to configure the sound card to play back the microphone with settings in the Windows Control Panel.

I will definitely try that. But the microphone i am using is a regular performance microphone but it is plugged into a guitar USB adapter thing. Does that change anything that i should do? Because it is super important that I can monitor my vocals while I'm singing.
