I know this looks like a topic that has been visited before, but I have read the help and tips and nothing seems to work.

I have a high-spec laptop running Windows 7 at 64 bit and everything else I have used on it runs perfectly. However, I have now got a Tevion USB turntable (from Aldi) and can't get any sound louder than a tinny background noise into the computer. I HAVE downloaded the Beta version of Audacity (that is supposed to work with W7) and the input device IS "USB Audio CODEC" (and the computer recognises it OK). The output IS set to "Speakers Realtek High Definition Audio" (and everything else on I-tunes, the Web, etc. plays through them fine). ALL levels (and I mean ALL: both within Audacity and in the System Controls) are set to 100% (!) and I still only get the faint tinny sound when I record (i.e the blue waveform barely has any profile at all and levels are at minus double figures.

What is wrong? Is it because I am on 64 bit? The blurb before downloading the Beta version did mention something about needing 64 bit software for a 64 bit computer and the Beta version puts itself in "X86", which I believe is the 32 bit software location. Is there a fix????

Audacity is only 32-bit. The 64-bit components that are needed are the drivers for the sound device (both the Realtek device and the turntable). If you purchased the laptop from a computer store and it has a Windows 7 sticker on it then most likely the Realtek drivers will be correct 64-bit drivers for the motherboard.

The turntable most likely will just use the USB audio class drivers that Windows supplies (check the turntable Manual to see if there are any driver downloads, and to see if Windows 7 is supported). Assuming you have gone to "Sound" in Windows, right-clicked over the turntable > Properties and set the level slider, your only options are:

* Take the turntable back to the store;
* See if it has a gain control (try under the chassis);
* If the laptop has a line-in (or if the mic port can be configured to accept line-level stereo input), and if the Aldi has RCA red and white speaker cables, then buy a RCA stereo > 1/8 inch TRS stereo adaptor and connect the turntable to the computer that way.

Unfortunately there is probably nothing you can do to fix this.
I have just had another frustrating morning trying to control a USB microphone. I came here to see if anybody had found a fix yet.

the consensus seems to be to use ASIO drivers, but Audacity does not seem to support them.

I am getting a mixer and a new microphone and switching to using the line input.

I take it there is no manufacturer's driver for this USB microphone?

Have you tried XP mode ?

Audacity supports ASIO in Audacity Beta but you have to compile that support in by building Audacity yourself. See http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/ASIO_Audio_Interface. I have seen no concrete reports suggesting ASIO would help.

I have to say that I'm also on Windows 7 x64 and I do not find the USB inputs very much louder than on XP with an Ion USB turntable that just uses the standard Windows USB Audio Class driver.
