Is this the same issue as http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic ... 29#p130665 ? Did you follow the advice there? How are you connecting or recording the guitar now? What version of Windows are you using?

No, it is not the same issue, I'm using a different amp all together.

I'm using windows 7 home basic. I have my guitar setup is this: guitar plugged into input of the amp, then the output of the amp is connected the the microphone jack of my computer using a 1/4 to 1/8 adapter.

I would expect that to likely give you mono and/or too loud recording, unless you have (or the mic port can be configured as) a stereo line-in. The fact that it's almost inaudible suggests you either have the output of the amplifier turned down, or you aren't even recording the correct input.

So in Audacity, I suggest you click Edit > Preferences: Devices and choose the input for the external mic, not the front mic or anything else. If you don't see the mic input, go to "Sound" in the Windows Control Panel, click the "Recording" tab, then use the right-click menu to enable it. If it is not listed at all, right-click and choose "Show Disabled Devices". If this is a laptop, you may have to go into the control panel of the sound card itself and choose "separate all input jacks as separate input devices".
