Closing a file w/o saving

I just downloaded & installed Audacity, and most of it works fine. However, when I play a file that I have imported and do not like it, I hit "close" and it closes the whole program, not just the file. "Exit" also closes the program. I just want to close the FILE, and try another without starting the whole program over.

Click Edit > Preferences: Interface and uncheck the option "Closing last window quits Audacity".

Note this means you must then use File > Exit to quit Audacity (system close methods like the window close button will also only clear to a new project).

The next Beta (1.3.13) will fix this problem (File > Close will always clear to a new project on closing the last window, and system close methods and File > Exit will always quit on closing the last window).

If you are not already doing so, you might like to consider subscribing to our announcements mailing list at the bottom of our home page: http://audacityteam.org/#announce

To subscribe, enter your e-mail address and click "Add". You will then receive occasional e-mails from us when we release new versions of Audacity.
