How to monitor in Vista/ Audacity Beta
Hi
I am relative newbie. I am trying to record vynil into my laptop. Had awful feedback so I switched off playthrough. It works now exept total silence in the monitoring department. I need to monitor to make sure there are no jumps etc and wasting time.

You will need to give a lot more information about your equipment, your computer, how it is all set up and what you are doing.
Alternatively you may be able to work out how to proceed from this information: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Trans ... uter_or_CD

Re: How to monitor in Vista/ Audacity Beta
Hi
Right, A trad record deck going to a preamp and onwards to the Mic Input via 3.5mm stereo jack. Then I think Connexant HD SmartAudio 221. I am running Audacity 1.3 betacode on Vista on an HP G60 214em Laptop. I come out of the laptop with Connexant hd smartaudio on a 3.5 mm jack to a sound system. It records ok with playthrough off. If I have playthrough activated terrible feedback so unable to monitor whats playing. If you need more info please ask

Check in the Windows Mixer (loudspeaker icon near the Time Date on your Desktop) that you have the recording source set to the line input and not to "Stereo Mix".

Re: How to monitor in Vista/ Audacity Beta
Hi Steve
When I open up the mixer as suggested I only get two devices popping up. A Windows Sounds fader and a Speakers fader(conexant hd smartaudio 221). I have just muted the Windows sound fader and will try again to record with playthrough.

Re: How to monitor in Vista/ Audacity Beta
Hi
Just checked my Mixer and had a new fader labelled "welcome to audacity " . I have none of the options you mentioned earlier. Just the faders.

I'm not on Vista, but I think you need to Right Click on the speaker icon to access all of the options.

Re: How to monitor in Vista/ Audacity Beta
There's another way into the sound card settings and that's through the Windows Control Panel.
