I'm really baffled. I've been recording using Audacity 1.3 Beta on two seperate computers, both with Windows 7 and the same settings. The recording has been fine on both of them until recently. Now, for some reason it records at it's normal volume on one, but not the other, so I know it isn't the microphone. I've constantly checked the input levels on Audacity and the sound mixer, checked to see that it is selecting my microphone to record from, but for some reason it's really, really quiet on one computer. It does spike loud when I purposely blow into it and make static, so...I'm stumped. I've tried uninstalling Audacity and reinstalling it, but that didn't fix it.
I'll admit that recently my brother had to fix the system due to a virus, but otherwise nothing's changed. The hardware all remained the same.
I really like recording on this other computer better, since there's less background noise, so I want to fix this as soon as possible. Just to point out one last time, both used to record at full volume, and one still does. Any suggestions at all would be helpful.

Check the sound card settings in the Windows Control Panel.
In particular, check the recording volume and switch off any "Advanced enhancements" (such as echo cancellation, noise removal, automatic gain...)

Re: Recording works on one computer but not another
I don't know if this is what's wrong, but after checking the recording options I activated Microphone Boost and that seemed to fix it. Thanks for leading me in the right direction!
