Which Audacity to use: Unicode or beta (ANSI)
I've recorded several short tracks for children's stories and discovered that some are in Unicode and others beta. Why Audacity is opening in one or the other is puzzling me. The lastest is that Exporting one of the tracks only goes into documents as data, and ONLY data. Need advice, please. I see that the latest version is 1.3.12 -beta. This I have. But should I delete the older 1.3.7 (Unicode)? If so, what will happen to the files that are on that version? Or can they be saved in the newer version. If so, how?

Audacity 1.3.12 supports projects made by all previous versions of Audacity.
It is not generally a good idea to keep old projects hanging around for a long time. Audacity projects tend to be extremely large and are easily broken. When you have finished working on a project you should Export the finished project as an ordinary audio file (for example as a WAV file for best quality, or as an MP3 or Ogg file for a smaller file).

Thanks Steve. Yet, I've just attempted to save one file for example, as Wav, 16 bit in Preferences, 16 bit Sample Format, and it again only shows in Documents as a data file. I cannot reopen it in Audacity. All versions of that recording are listed only as data. The only way I can open the file is Recent Files. In fact ALL the recorded files are now listed as data. The only thing I did differently is (I thought) downloading a newer version of Lame. My assumption is that this is the root of the problem. The version I have is Lame v3.98.3 for Audacity.
Re: Which Audacity to use: Unicode or beta (ANSI)
Audacity does not "Save" audio files. To create a normal audio file you must "Export".
File menu > Export > Audio.
Lame is not used for exporting WAV files, it is only used for exporting in MP3 format.
"Lame v3.98.3 for Audacity" is the correct version.

Re: Which Audacity to use: Unicode or beta (ANSI)
Thanks. For some reason, I closed Documents (all data), reopened and all the files are once again listed as either Wav. or MP3. Go figure. Should I delete Unicode?
Re: Which Audacity to use: Unicode or beta (ANSI)
Yes you can delete it, but to be on the (slightly paranoid) safe side, delete it to the Recycle Bin (trash), then check that everything works and you have not deleted anything that you still need.

That worked. Thanks. All back on track.
