I don't think this problem has come up previously on the forum, but I'm not sure exactly what you are clicking on. Do you mean this:

Are you using Audacity 1.3.12 (look in "Help > About Audacity" for the exact version number)
Are you running Audacity in compatibility mode?
Other than this issue does Audacity work correctly?

i believe its in the view link on audacity, towards thew bottom is the mixing board type thing, it becomes a seperate window.
once thats opened it crashes soon after, so i would lose what i did and obviously i cannot use it but i like it better than using the slides of vol. bal. on the sides of each trak, this mixer board panel . to me, is better to use, and now i cannot
i have the current vers. of audacity, using win 7 64 bit. i did no compatibility mode cause ive used the exact same version on other pcs, like 3 or 4, and had no problems and all were win 7. 3 were laptops and one was a desk top.
never had such a problem before. i guess i'll try compatibility, even though as i said i have tried a few other pcs and had no problem with it, but i cannot use those pcs anymore. i have set aside a pc for music only, and of course, i get this problem. i'll try compatibil;ity and add a comment either way.

I think you mean the "Mixer Board".

"View Menu > Mixer Board"
Then this pops up:

Does Audacity then crash when you click anywhere on the Mixer Board, or only when you try to adjust one of the sliders?
The more exact you can be with the fault description, the easier it will be for a developer to track down the cause of the problem.

all i have to do is just open the board from the link, wait 3 to 5 secs, it freezes, song still plays for like 3 0r 4 secs and complete freeze, crash. other than that so far i have not have any other problems with audacity, but i sure need to use the board, dont like using the vol, l-r slides on the left of each track, i like to minimize those as i tend to make more than 8 tracks per recording i do.

Hi!

I help out a tiny bit with the Audacity team and would like to see if I can recreate your problem on my system, so far I have not been able to do so; I am on 64bit Win7.

Are you working on a saved project or does this occur if you just start Audacity and create/import tracks? If you are working on a saved project, before updating, open Preferences (<CTRL +p> by default) and look at the the Project tab, is "Always copy..." or "Do not copy..." selected?

Next, one thing which would help would be for you to update to Audacity 1.3.13:
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Night ... s_Binaries
This will do two things--first, it will have us both working with the same code base and second it will give you a more stable program with a number of bugs fixed (including some specifically involving the Mixer Board).

After updating, if you still experience the problem I will need a lot more explicit details on what you are doing which displays the crash.

Before renaming your config file, open Preferences and look at the the Import tab--tell me if you are set to "Make a copy...(safer)" or "Read uncompressed...(faster)".

To insure that it is not (and I doubt that it is) a configuration problem, rename your config file, it is found here on Win7:
C:Users<userName>AppDataRoamingAudacityaudacity.cfg
(where <userName> is replaced by your user name). Name it something like OLDaudacity.cfg so you may go back to using all you preferred settings later.

Now, just before the crash, take a screen shot and send it to me in a Private Message if it is too big to post here. If possible catch the Mixer Board open.

Next, try to create a repeatable set of steps (as minimal as possible) and list them in excruciating detail! Something like:
1) start Audacity
2) dismiss splash -- check never show
3) create (3) 1 minute 30 second mono tracks of noise
3a) or import 3 mono WAV files
3b) or import [whatever causes a crash]
4) choose Play from menu
4a) or press spacebar to play
4b) or click Play on toolbar
5) wait 5 seconds
6) choose Mixer Board from View Menu
7) let play continue until end of tracks--no crash
7a) or wait 5 seconds, mess with track 2's volume slider--crash

If you can only get it to crash using specific audio you might need to send me the audio with which to test. As this seem to be a problem which has not been reported before, it is fine to take this off list for any back-and-forth between us. I subscribed to this thread so will get pinged within 15 minutes of any reply (if I am "in the office" <grin>).

that download doesnt help me, it will unzip but then i have a file of the 1.3.13 sitting in my download folder. isnt there one that extracts like any other audacity download and actually goes into the audicty files i already have on my C drive? im not illiterate in pc things, but i never installed any file like that that doesnt go to the same direcxtory as all other audacity downloads would. i dont know what to do wih the unzipped file.

ive only used aup and mp3 files to bring into audacity, - open select aup file, it unloads in audacity, press play or do record, its fine if i never open the mixer board. once i click it on, there is no errors in the appearance or anything, a few seconds of playing - recording, it freezes, then i get the error msg.
same for the mp3 file, i did - import - play or record - open mixer board, few secs frozen.

only "ask user" in the projects tab is checked.

you say to rename my configuration file, ummm i dont know where that is or what you mean, as ive never had to do that before.

my import info is i have "read uncompressed" checked.

the mixer board opens, there are no visible errors or anything weird looking nor sounding. it plays for a few secs, freezes, like any other frozen window, it kinda fades a bit, then the error box msg. pretty simple and consistant as that.

i can open or import a file into audacity, play it, record with it, so far only used aup and mp3 files. no problems as long as i never click on the mixer board. then it will die. its as simple as that noi matter how long or short the project takes, no matter how big or little the files in the project are, and no matter if it is aup or mp3, as long as i never click and open the mixer board i am fine. never had this problem on a hanfull of other pcs i've used in the past.

as i said im not a complete dummy in this, far as following direction, but once i cant follow you, i really cant do anything. so first, what do i do with this download once unzipped? cant do anything till i figure that out, i realize it is the new audacity but typically an install installs new version over the old, i think, cause i dont have multiple audacities. all my setting will not be in this new version folder so im a bit at a loss as ive never downloaded things in this way that do not automatically go right over the old program youre updating. please forgive my ignorance.
