Hello,

Audacity 1.2.6 has been great on my Windows XP laptop however recently I got a new more powerful laptop running Windows 7.

On the new laptop I've installed 1.3.12-beta (Unicode) but can't seem to get it right. The recording level is now amplified and so the waveform is pretty maxed out, I tried a few things like reduce the line input gain control which helps but still has some noise in the background and distortion.

I'm running my mixer at the same levels and basically everything in the same order as when I was running it on my XP laptop.

Do I need to tweak some preferences or change the setup? Any quesions let me know.

Why do you think your new laptop has a "Line in" connector? Most laptops have only a "Microphone" connector (which is considerably more sensitive than a line-in connector and will overload if you feed a line level signal into it).

You've posted in the Audacity 1.2 section of the forum, but as you are using Audacity 1.3.12 I'll move this topic to the 1.3 part of the forum.

I'm having the issue recording via a USB interface, has anyone had this issue?

What is the USB interface?

The Genie has the ability to switch between Line-In and Phono-In. Use Phono-In only if you connect a turntable. All other applications should use Line-In.

Cheers Koz it does but it's not that because it is running on Line In via Mixer and CDJ's. Is it something to do with Windows 7 compatibility?

This setup works perfectly on my old laptop, Windows Vista running Audacity 1.2.6.

Assuming that you have the hardware set up correctly (correct input etc.) and you are still getting too high a level, then go into the Windows Control Panel and in the "Sounds" section, set the recording level. (some information here: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer ... trol_Panel )
Audacity cannot control the audio hardware directly - You need to set up the hardware and the Windows sound system, and Audacity will record whatever the sound system delivers.

Thanks Steve, unfortunately I've not been able to make this any better, I've read through lots of the Wiki pages and tweaked and tested the settings. The outcome, the levels are still very high and the playback is too high and distorted.

I may borrow a reliable Vista computer to test it on as the issues have only started since WIndows 7.

If you have any other pages I should look at let me know.
