Transferring file from digital piano

Post by heatherlp5 » Sat Feb 26, 2011 3:15 pm

I have a Kawai ES6 digital piano with an internal recorder. I have recorded myself playing and wish to transfer this to my laptop via the USB cable. I have Windows 7. The keyboard appears as 'USB Midi' in 'Devices and Printers' but doesn't give any other detail, eg of any files on it. When I go onto Audacity and click 'Import', it doesn't find it. The keyboard manual says that files recorded using the internal recorder can be transferred using an external sequencer. Can Audacity do this?
I have RECORDED it using the record button but quality is very poor. If this is the only way to do it, I will do it this way but how do I make it as good quality as the original? I have seen tutorials and one of the first things to do is check volume mixer on the laptop but Windows 7 Volume mixer is completely different from older versions. I also don't know which recording and playback devices should be altered, if any at the moment 'HD audio codec is selected.
I am very happy to follow instructions but need them to be clear at every step and from beginning to end! Thank you - hope this doesn't sound too involved.

You can't record the piano from its USB connection because that is not an audio connection. The USB connector on the Kawai ES6 is a MIDI connector.

The Kawai ES6 has LINE OUT (L / R) connectors. You should connect these to the Line In connector on your computer.

If your computer is a full size PC then there will probably be a "Line In" connector on the back of the computer. Note that a "Line In" connector is not the same as a "Microphone" connector. Microphone connectors are designed for much smaller signals than "Line level" signals and the Keyboard output will overload a microphone input.

If your computer is a laptop you may have a problem as laptop computers often do not have a Line in connector, but only a microphone connector. Some laptop computers have a combined microphone/Line in connector, but the recording quality is often poor. In most cases it is best to use an external USB sound card for recording line level devices (such as your piano) with laptop computers.

It may also be worth checking that you are using the best version of Audacity. Go to the Help menu and look in "About Audacity". The best version is currently Audacity 1.3.12.
