Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Unable to load .aup file on Audacity

Post by Zan Bansi » Wed Feb 23, 2011 10:49 am

Hi. I'm a first time user on Audacity and ive downloaded the 1.3.12 Beta version on WINDOWS XP.

Recently, ive recorded a 1 hour mix on the Audacity in my friend's Macbook and after it was done, ive saved it as an .aup file into my portable hardisk. As such, im unable to load it from my portable harddisk to my Audacity on my laptop. From the Audacity, ive click open and selected the .aup file, but then a window pop up and stating "COULD NOT OPEN FILE". Afterwhich, ive tried to open the file in the folder (data) and a window pop up stating "DATA REFERS TO A LOCATION THAT IS UNAVAILABLE. IT COULD BE ON A HARD DRIVE ON THIS COMPUTER, OR ON A NETWORK. CHECK TO MAKE SURE THE DISK IS PROPERLY INSERTED, OR THAT YOU ARE CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET, OR YOUR NETWORK AND THEN TRY AGAIN. IF IT STILL CANNOT BE LOCATED, THE INFORMATION MIGHT BEEN MOVED TO OTHER LOCATION"

Need your help urgently as im meeting a tight deadline for an important project using Audacity. Thank You. :P

See this page from the 1.3 manual where you will see that Projects are much more than just the .aup file: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Audacity_Projects

You will either need to Export a WAV on the machine-1 to transfer to machine-2 - or you will have to move all the audio files and any external clips in use - and keep them in the same locations (moving projects can be a tricky task).

If you have a simple single track project then just use the File > Export command to export a WAV file - you can then load this onto your second machine and there use the File > Import command to load in the WAV. I would also recommend that you go to Edit > Preferences > Import/Export and select the radio button which says "Make a copy of uncompressed audio files before editing (safer)".

If you have a project that has multiple tracks you will probably want to move the project. To do that you will need to move the .aup file <my_project_name>.aup and the folder <my_project_name>_data and all the little .au files that it contains to the second machine - and on the second machine you need to ensure that the .aup file and the data file remain at the same filing level/location. Before you do this you should use File > Check Dependencies... to check whether your project depends on any external files - if it does the dialog box will give you the option to make a copy of thosse files within the project.
