Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Won't grab usb port

Post by mewalden » Sun Feb 20, 2011 9:50 pm

I'm using Vista Home Basic. I have a Behringer UFO device. I had it working once, using Audacity current version. I got the beta version of Audacity, and discovered that now I could only select the Microsoft Sound Mapper- my "Stereo Mix" Realtek High Definition Audio driver wouldn't work anymore. After reading some bloggery on other sites, I became worried that MS Sound Mapper might not handle stereo well.

So, I thought I would update the Realtek driver. Did that, and discovered that now I couldn't even select it. I updated it again, and now I have it, but now nothing works. I can hear sound from earbuds monitoring the Behringer device, so I know it is delivering to the USB port, but it is a though "Stereo Mix" no longer knows about USB input.

What do I do next?

SoundMapper is only a "virtual" device that uses whatever is the current default device in "Sound" in the Windows Control Panel.

If you want to record from the UFO just choose "USB Audio Codec" in the Audacity Devices Preferences. Stereo Mix is irrelevant to the UFO.

On a few systems the Audacity input and output sliders for the built-in sound device may not behave correctly (or its inputs may display incorrectly) if a USB device is connected. We are working on that problem, but in the meantime if it affects you, just disconnect the UFO from the computer and restart Audacity.

Using the USB Audio Codec sort of works, but it is only monophonic. The Behringer device gives stereo. Is there a way to make the CODEC stereo? My dropdown box identifies it as a microphone.

If you are on Windows 7 or Vista you may want to set the default format to stereo.
