Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Another one of those error while opening sound device issues

Post by BondFan84 » Sat Feb 12, 2011 5:24 am

Hi there guys. Sorry in advance for this question because I know you've gotten it a lot but I can't figure this out.

I have been using Audacity forever and love it but recently (today) I went to record some audio off YouTube and got the dreaded "Error while opening sound device. Please check the input device settings and the project sample rate." For the record I have Windows 7 64 bit and am using Audacity 1.3 beta. I have searched these forums and other sites for similar problems and I have done the suggestions like going to Edit...Preferences...Audio I/O and setting it to MME for the host and Microsoft Sound Mapper for the output and that doesn't work. I also have RealTek and all it does is record loud static so I disable it in the Volume Mixer. Also when I go to adjust the preferences, Audacity disappears from the volume mixer. I don't know what that's all about. I can play audio tracks, just can't record them. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

That's the wrong error. That's the error you get when you're recording a physical sound device, not internal sound.

That's a windows problem not due to audacity: you need to enable the device you want to record from in the windows mixer.

If you are trying to record Youtube see ... http://audacityteam.org/help/faq?s=reco ... =streaming

[ NB: some computer's (internal) sound cards have the facility to "record what you hear" disabled, apparently to avoid piracy litigation ].
Note: on Windows Vista or 7, you must choose the required input source in the "Recording Device" dropdown in the "Audio I/O" tab of Preferences ("Devices" tab in Audacity Beta). On Windows, if you don't have a “Wave Out” or “Stereo Mix” option, or if it won't record, go to the system Control Panel and try to enable this option there

An alternative for Youtube is ... http://youtubedownload.altervista.org/ [ which has the option to rip the audio (mp3) from the video after you have downloaded it ]

Thanks for the responses guys. I gave up and did a system restore because I wanted to know if I installed something that would cause a confilction with my recording devices. I recently installed Nero 7, SUPER video compressor, and DirectX in the last couple of days. After the system restore, I received a pop up when I opened Audacity about deleting temporary files and clicked No and it worked! It was so weird. Would you guys think that any of these programs would cause an issue? Also once I clicked Yes on that pop up and it gave me that error so would that also be an issue?

Issue solved for the moment! Thanks again!
