1/2 second delay: input via usb sound card, output via headp

when i hook a mic or instrument into my usb sound card, i hear a 1/2 second delay coming back out... will be impossible to lay down tracks in sync... how can i fix this?
usin Vantec usb external audio adapter (sound card) - Windows 7 - toshiba laptop

Switch off "Software Playthrough" (near the bottom of the Transport menu).
If you need to monitor the input through your headphones, do so from the headphone socket on the USB sound card.
