Want to hear metronome (not record it) while montoring rec

Post by Twix » Tue Jan 25, 2011 10:05 pm

So I have my drums set up, mics on, into my mixer, sounding good through headphones, have the sound recording good in audacity, but then when I add the metronome for some reason its included in the recording!

I have fiddled and fiddled, searched all over this page but to no avail (or blind)

If one of you can help me it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Check your sound card settings.
I presume that your mixer is connected to the Line-in on your computer?
If so, check that your sound card is set to record from "Line" and NOT "Stereo Mix".

If I dont set it to stereo mix the sound records all wierd, like a phased effect.

Its just plugged into the line in/mic on my laptop, which was no problem when i had xp, but this 7 seems to be a nightmare for recording.

Ill give it a go again with line in JIC

Thanks

That's Windows and/or the sound card drivers "helping" you by processing the sound to make your voice sound better on Skype. It is assuming that you are using a microphone and is probably adjusting the gain, performing "echo cancellation" and "Noise Reduction". These are sometimes useful features for voip or voice recognition applications, but they totally mess up recordings.

That could be a problem. Did you "Show hidden and disconnected devices"? http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php? ... ng_devices
Is this a laptop PC? If so it may only have a Mic input and no Line input. If it is a full size PC then there should be an additional socket on the back for Line input.

PC microphone inputs are generally mono and expect an input signal that is about 1000x smaller than the signal that you are putting in. They are also usually very poor quality. IF your computer is a laptop PC and your "mic" input can handle line-level stereo (without being damaged by the high level signal) then you need to go into the Windows Control Panel and set the "Mic" input to "44100 HZ CD Quality (stereo)", then find where the "Enhancements" are and switch them off.

If all of this fails, then you will need to use a different sound card. (I use a cheap Behringer UCA 202 which works pretty well with a mixer).
