steve,

I thought about what you said about recording in the left channel and playing back in the right (silent) channel... so I figured that the only reason that the right channel is silent is because of the adapter itself, right?

So I did a recording with the adapter in with the connector cable to the Line In, then I unplugged the adapter and In Line connector cable and plugged the speakers back in normally, and I DO get a recording that then plays from the one channel recorded in from Audacity... it worked!... so at least I know that when I get the correct adapter, that this method of loopback will work for me... and the sound quality should be just as good as normal when I have an actual stereo adapter... maybe one with gold connections.

So now I was able to get a test recording and export to an MP3 of a French guy (rambling on about something) from a French Jazz internet radio station on iTunes... how cool is that?

Thanks,

steve,

Just for reference, here is the adapter that I needed all along, from the Radio Shack website, so at least I have a stock number to check with my local store to see if they have it since they don't seem very knowledgeable about what the subtle differences are...

It's a Dual 3.5mm Stereo Female to 3.5mm Stereo Male Y-adapter...

I needed to just look at all of the various adapters on several pages full of them in order to find this one since the Radio Shack website search engine couldn't find it.

It looks very similar to the one I bought, but it has gold connections and it has dual stereo female jacks.

Re: choice of Y-adapters

Hi steve,

I had one last question on this topic if it isn't too much to ask...

There are two types of Y-adapters that are available that would work for me... seen below... and I'm wondering if one produces better sound quality than the other... there's the type that I was talking about and pictured in my last post, and there's the type that is short cables... I'm wondering, is one or the other likely to produce less feedback or distortion or anything like that?

Probably not. However I prefer to use the "cable" type as they tend to put less strain on the computer socket.

Thanks steve,

Back to Radio Shack to talk to the hack that caused me to have to go back holding my little Radio Shack sack... that is so wack... sorry, I take that back.
