File won't open
An important audio file recorded using ver 3.1.12 will not open. It was "saved as " to assign a name. There was no program or computer crash. The file looks identical to others that do open OK. The file contains several folders, file name, e00, 5-d0x folders. There are 1176 files in these folders. The individual files in the d0x folders do open and play normally (6 seconds each). Is it possible to recover this recoarding? If so how?
Re: File won't open
There are two parts to an Audacity project. There is the Audacity Project file (.AUP) and there is the audio data that is used in the Project. The .AUP file does not contain any audio. The audio data may be contained in the project "_data" folder, or elsewhere on your computer. It is essential that you do not manually move or change the audio data in any way, or the Audacity Project will no longer work.
See here for an explanation of how Audacity Projects work: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Audacity_Projects
To create an ordinary audio file you must "Export" from the Audacity Project as an audio file (for example as a WAV file, or as a lower quality MP3 file).

Re: File won't open
I have both the .aup file and the data file which appears to be intact. However they were in different folders and had slightly different names (ie 122011. aup and 01022011 for the data folder.) I tried copying the .aup into the same folder with the data folder, but the .aup file cannot find the data file. I tried changing the data folder name to match the .aup file, but it still cannot find the data file. Is there a way out of this situation?R Banks wrote:An important audio file recorded using ver 3.1.12 will not open. It was "saved as " to assign a name. There was no program or computer crash. Re: File won't open
Open the aup file in any text editor and read it. The first or second line of text should tell you what the original filenames were.

Re: File won't open
Thank you for the help. I found that the data file name had a space that was not in the file name in the .aup file. When this was corrected in the data filename, the project opens perfectly. Please don't ask me to explain how the filename mismatch happened. Retired analog engineers are not always compatible with the digital world. I will let this mystery remain unsolved. Again thenks for the help.
Re: File won't open
OK - I have read all of these posts and I believe that I am in compliance. However the files still won't open. Any other ideas? I did download the newest version - did I do something wrong there? I record and saved as... just as it gave it to me. The files are here on the desktop but will not open (cannot find) - I didn't change, modify, or move anything. Help!!

The newest version of Audacity is 1.3.13. You can check your version at Help > About Audacity.debgene8 wrote:OK - I have read all of these posts and I believe that I am in compliance. The exact error is what - "cannot find _data folder"?
What version of Windows?
Is the _data folder with the same name as the project also on the desktop?
