Removing background voice from recording?

I recently recorded my sister's symphonic band concert using a digital camera. My brother spoke too close to the camera and now his voice is distinctly in the middle of the audio.
I've split the audio from the video.
How do I get the 5 seconds of voice out of it?

I've already tried Vocal Remover, Noise Removal, and splitting the tracks, inverting the right track, then setting both to mono -- this remove the audio entirely from my recording.

That's because your recording is mono. Both of these methods require stereo, and work by removing audio that is panned centre - that is, audio that is identical in both left and right channels. For a mono recording that is on a stereo track, both tracks are identical, so this "centre pan removal" technique will remove everything. Unfortunately your brother is a permanent feature in the recording. The only way to remove his voice from the recording is to delete that section.
