I am trying to record my first LP with this but having difficulties. After several minutes I get distortion in the signal. If I stop and start the Audacity recorder it goes away for a while.

I'm using Windows 7 with an Audio Delta 2496 sound card. Deck is an old but good Linn.

At first I thought my cartridge was picking up dirt and kept cleaning it. That seemed to help but only as I stopped and started the recording everytime!

Anybody similar problems / solutions?

I hope that you are using a phono preamp in your recording chain - you need it for the necessary RIAA equalization to be applied to the signal from your TT - and to raise the signal to line-level.

Tell us a bit more about how you are connecting your kit (e.g. RCA to 3.5mm Minijack Preamp to PC line-in).

I have a Musical Fidelity pre amp on the Linn. The technical set up is fine.

After some research it turns out to be a problem with the PC. It is a Dell Inspiron with an i5.

The Intel Speedstep CPU power management seems to cause issues after a while. Turning off Speedstep in the BIOS seems to have sorted it out.

Some laptop owners find that they have to turn off mains power an run on the battery to get a clean signal. My Dell Vostro is fine on mains power though.

The Intel Speedstep problem is apparently a known issue in other circles.

It regulates the CPU clock and voltage to save power when it thinks the CPU is not busy. This plays havoc with the audio sampling causing all sorts of issues.
