I am using Windows 7, and have been using a 1.12 version. This version ( obtained through Numark) did not allow export of tracks to separate files, descibed in the manual. I downloaded 1.13(beta). When going through Preferences, it was not possible to change from Mono to Stereo ( it exported tracks to separate files nicely). There was just one obtion : Mono. I have now downloaded a 1.12 version and am back to start: Have stereo but can't export to separate files.
Best regards

For Vista and Windows 7 use Audacity 1.3.12.
Windows 7 has it's own setting for mono/stereo recording. If that is set to "mono" then Audacity 1.2.x may appear to record stereo, but it is actually recording just one channel twice (which is a bug), whereas Audacity 1.3.12 will (correctly) only allow you to record mono.
To set Windows 7 to record Stereo, go to:
Windows Start button > Control Panel > Sound
or
Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound
Select the "Recording" tab.
Right click on the recording input that you are using (if your turntable is USB then it will be the USB option) and select "Properties"
Select the "Advanced" tab and set the recording format to "CD quality stereo".
(Select the "Levels" tab to adjust the recording level).
Click "OK" to close.
Open Audacity (or close and restart Audacity if already open).
Go to "Edit menu > Preferences > Devices" and set "Channels" to "2 (stereo)".
