Having problems with Input Meter

When I first installed Audacity the input meter worked fine. However after about 3 uses The input meter is now limited. There is a red line on the meter at about -30db and any input will not go past that point which means that I can't record anything. I have checked the mike with Skype and it's working fine. I have tried everything I can possibly think of in case I did something wrong and I am now at a complete loss as to why this has happened. Anybody with suggestions on how to fix this problem.

If the red recording cursor in the waveform is moving but there is no waveform being drawn behind it you are probably not recording from the correct input (or if you are, the input is no longer connected). See:
