Crash at import, freeze at save with 1.3.12

My Audacity 1.3 Beta on Windows 7 has suddenly gone very unstable. I don't seem to be able to to very much without it crashing or freezing. I have resorted to using old 1.2 which does not have the problem (but has a confusing layout of functionality).

I don't know what has changed!
The problem happens with all larger files, i.e auido books etc.
My machine has a better than average spec, 32 bit Windows with 4 GB ram installed and dualcore intel processor.

What should I do?

One of the many error messages I have been seeing recently. This one at importing a 6 hour mp3 file.

I'm an XP person and have no experience of W7 - but reading your post the one thing that rings alarm bells for me is your mention of a 6 hour MP3. Now this is a huge chunk of audio to be working on as a single audio file - is there any good reason why you are working with such large files/projects?

I think 8 hour is the maximum and that is on the cautious side. I've done 12 hour files with no problems until I found out the 8 is the maximum.. I stick with 4-6 hour as the maximum now. I don't think it's the file size causing this.

I have converted around a hundred audio files that length, I think. I've had not problems with crashes, ever... But now suddenly, it has started happening with Audacity 1.3 (doesn't happen with 1.2).
