Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Playing MP3 files from the Internet

Post by bigcat1943 » Mon Jan 10, 2011 8:45 pm

I installed the Audacity beta for Windows Vista. I set it up according to instructions. Everything with the program I have used works properly thus far. My problem is this--when I go to the internet to the web page I maintain, I can no longer play my Audio MP3 files on the web page. It wants me to download them to my computer. Before installing Audacity my web page worked properly. I click on the sermon I wish to listen to and it would begin.

What do I need to do to get my web page back to functioning the way it did before and still keep Audacity working properly?

Step 1. Unless you want receive a torrent of spam emails you should remove your email address from the previous post or disguise it

This does not sound like an Audacity issue. you may simply be clicking on the website's download button instead of the play button,
I've done that myself on Musopen where the download and play buttons are very close together ...

I removed your email address. That's insanely dangerous on the forum. You can put it back if you wish by editing your post, but I wouldn't. We won't be writing you back anyway. We try to keep discussions on the forum. This isn't a help desk.

If no play button is displayed, and you get one of these warnings if you do try to download the mp3 ...
security setting too 'high' on internet explorer.png

Then the security setting on your browser (Internet Explorer) is set too high to permit the on-line player, (Adobe flash), or downloading.
Solution: turn browser security down a notch, (to "medium-high" on IE), and the play button should re-appear when you refresh the page.

[Again this has absolutely nothing to do with Audacity].

This is not audio processing related topic so I moved this to the proper forum (1.3.12/Windows).
Include as much details as you can in your post (Audacity version, Operating System, Equipment used, etc).
Please post your question in the appropriate forum (regarding audacity version and operating system).

Are you using the same web browser as before? Have you changed the source code of your web page, and what is that code? Are you embedding a media player in that page, or just giving a text link to the MP3?

If a text link, one possibility is that you have created a default association with MP3 to some program other than the one that held the association before. Did you set Audacity to be the default program to open MP3s?

Hi, everyone. I'm having a possibly related problem. I used Audacity to edit down a podcast from the radio, and when I posted the resultant mp3 file in my webspace to link to it on my website, it refuses to play. Here's the page with the file:
http://www.susanbernofsky.com/MorningEd ... erview.mp3
Can anyone think of a good reason why this wouldn't be playing?
I've got a similar file mounted on the site (NOT edited w/ Audacity), and then one works fine:

Thanks so much!
Susan

Both files play fine here.
The main difference that I can see is that the one that you say does not play is a mono file, whereas the other one is stereo, but that should not make a difference as to whether it plays or not, and as I said, they both play fine on my computer.
What program are you using to play them?
Are you sure that the problem was not just a temporary glitch on your web site?

Thanks for checking this out, Steve. I was just playing them from within Safari. But after reading your message, I downloaded Firefox (didn't have it on this computer), and lo and behold, the rogue file plays in Firefox with no problem, so maybe the problem is just a Safari issue (?). Strange!

P.S. Aha, so it IS a Safari problem. There's a whole discussion forum devoted to this specific problem. Live and learn. The m3p that *does* play without problems is one I uploaded 2 years ago, back when I had a much older version of Safari that apparently didn't have this bug.
