hey, new to the forum so please help me out.

i'm running windows 7 32bit and using the new beta version of audacity. i recently was using the xp version of audacity on my old laptop (windows xp) with my stanton usb turntable for ripping my vinyl. worked great with no problems. now with the new computer (windows 7 laptop) when i record off my turntable, it sounds fine. but when i play back the recording there is a feedback sound, both during the recording when the vinyl is playing and when its not.

i tried adjusting the volume of my stereo amp, adjusting the playback/playthrough settings in audacity, nothing works.

please help, it is driving my nuts.

So you are saying you record a hiss? Are you saying if you enable Transport > Software Playthrough that you can't hear the hiss?

Are you recording from USB Audio Codec in the 1.3.12 Devices Preferences?

Did you use the stereo amplifier in XP - have you tried muting it or turning off its monitoring?

Have you moved the turntable further away from the computer and from the amplifier? Have you exchanged the USB cable?

And is it a hiss, or is it actually a hum (i.e. mains hum & its harmonics)?

Basically, when i try to record from my turntable (using a USB input, which is designed for this turntable, it has its own line to usb cable), i get a humming sound like background noise. it doesn't match harmonics with whatever song i am ripping, and it is consistent throughout the recording. what is strange is that while i am recording the vinyl, it is playing in real time through my stereo amp with no hum sound. But, when i play back the audio file in audacity after it is recorded, the humming occurs, as well as when i save that file and play it with windows media player.

my turntable does not require a ground, and the distance to my computer hasnt changed since i was using the audacity on xp. im not sure where this feedback type hum is from, but im thinkin just screw it and go for the behringer rca to usb sound card device.

any thoughts either way would be greatly appriciated, thanks for the time

From reading your post it sounds as though you are connecting your turntable both to the PC via the USB connector and to the amp of your music system. That may well be how your hum is occurring.

I wouldn't do that - I used to use a USB TT and when I was using the USB=>PC I had the RCA plugs carefully insulated by wrapping them in insulation tape. If you want to monitor your recording you can set Audacity to do that - which will be better as you will be monitoring what Audacity has rather than what you are sending via RCA to your music system. To do this you will need to set the input device to be your USB device but your output device will need to be reset to target the internal soundcard in your PC.

I'm having the same issue. I did some research on the internet and I believe this is an issue with Windows 7, both the 64 and 32 bit versions, and the use of their standard USB Audio Codec. It seems as though there are a lot of people that are using USB devices, like turntables, and getting static, hum, and distortion in their digital recordings.

When hooking up USB devices like turntables, the driver sees the device as a microphone device. In my observation, the input levels are way too high, which causes all of the distortion and clipping. I have somewhat gotten around the issue by setting the input level as low as they can go without totally silencing the input. I do this within both the device manager and on Audacity's input slider. I still get a low level of distortion, but I can make it manageable/tolerable by using the noise remover effect. Afterwards, I used the amplify affect after all the noise was removed. I did have to play around a lot with the configurations on both of these effects though. Using the default settings gave me some pretty lousy sounding audio.

Here's a sample of the internet stories I found regarding this problem. I'm not sure if the folks at Audacity have any influence on getting this problem fixed, but it would be great if we could get a new updated driver that resolves this issue. Frankly, I'm surprised more people haven't complained and that one hasn't been published already.

Until this gets fixed, I'm considering using RCA as my method of connecting my turntable to my computer. Hope this information helps.
