Cant hear the track that i am recording over in the headphns

I am using Audacity 1.3 Beta and everything seems to be working perfectly fine until now, when i got a new headset (mic & headphones) to use. I can record through the mic but when i am trying to record i can not hear the track/mp3 that i am trying to record over, which doesnt do any good cuz i cnt hear it and follow with it. the headphones work perfectly fine with everything else, including when i hit play just so i can listen to what i want to record over. but when i hit the record button. i cant hear the track through the headphones. Can any help please! ASAP!

USB headset or does it plug into your sound card?
Either way, you need to set the correct recording and playback devices in
Edit menu > Preferences > Devices.

If you need further help, please also include details of which version of Windows you use.

My headphones plug into the two jacks for the headphones and mic so it would b sound card i believe. and i went to edit, preferences, and devices, and i changed it to the microsoft sound mapper- input and output for both recording and playback and that didnt work.
Its a windows vista.
