how to achieve breaks in between tracks

When recording old cassette tapes in order to transfer to CD, the recordings come out as one long track, not a series of individual ones - with the result that the CD player will not recognise, or move to, individual tracks but treats the CD as one long track.

How does one overcome this, without having to fiddle about editing every single track?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
