How do I avoid the extra seconds on the end of a song?

I have been converting my old cassettes to digital recently, and have found an annoying 'feature'. Once I separate the individual songs (using CTL-ALT-X), label them, and do 'export multiple' - the length of each song is expanded to end at a 2- or 7-second mark (e.g., a song that lasts 2:55 in Audacity comes out as 2:57; a 3:18 song comes out 3:22). If the next song starts at 3:20 on the Audacity timeline, the first two seconds of it are getting tacked onto the end of the previous song. Is there a way around this? It seems strange, since I used Audacity extensively a few years ago, and don't recall seeing this issue.
