24 bit sample format

Hi,
I have gone to Preferences and chosen the 24-bit sample format as my default. When I load a 24/96 WAV file, it appears in the waveform picture with the label "32-bit float". The label does have the 96000 rate correct. Is the label wrong or is Audacity 1.3 converting to 32-bit float? If it is converting, is there a way to stop the conversion? As I said, I thought that I had chosen 24-bit as my default.

Thanks,
Mike

The "default" sample rate in Preferences sets the default format for recording.
All internal processing is done in 32 bit so it is generally best to leave the default Quality setting at 44100 32 bit float.
