I've downloaded the FFmpeg file
Yet when I try to open a >WMA file I get the message...

"Audacity recognised the type of file....
Importers supposedly supporting such files are:
mpeg compatibile

but none of them understood this format."

Any suggestions?

You've posted in the Audacity 1.2 part of the forum. Which version of Audacity are you using? (look in "Help > About Audacity")

There are different types of WMA file. FFmpeg support for WMA is incomplete so you may have a version of WMA that is not yet supported by FFmpeg. Try using SUPER (by erightsoft) to convert the files to WAV format (it's free) and then import the WAV files into Audacity.

SO odd - I have messed with the "Edit" preferences...

locate "C:Program FilesFFmpeg for Audacityavformat-52.dll"

then , randomly, it will work!

I can then drag & drop an audio file from my Music; the program converts to "AUP" and I'm happy.

Yet, next time I open the program (Audacity) - it won't work

Yes it finds the 3 different files - as attached screen-shot shows

I'm unsure which of the 3 files to use ??

these are the 3 that I've loaded at random - which gets the program able to import a track once - but no again after closing it

Could you post a screen shot of Audacity Preferences (as in your last post) but immediately after clicking "OK" on the "Locate FFmpeg" window.

I get the same prob. Unable to open .WMA after installing FFmpeg.

The full message is:
"Audacity has automatically detected FFmpeg
Do you still want to locate them manually?
[YES] [NO]"

Click on the "NO" button.
(Audacity has already located the correct FFmpeg so you do not need to do it manually)

There is more than one type of WMA file (Microsoft keep changing the format).
FFmpeg support for WMA files is experimental and currently incomplete (it does not support all variations of the WMA format).
If you have FFmpeg installed and particular files still fail to import correctly it is because the current version of FFmpeg does not support the file type. You will then need to use an external program to convert the file into a supported format (such as "Microsoft PCM WAV").

It used to be possible to conver WMA files to WAV format with Windows Media Player but I think this feature may have been removed in recent versions of Windows Media Player, in which case you could use one of the many media format converters (such as the free program SUPER by erightsoft).
