i looked before i posted, but my voice is real muffled. its not my mic or computer because suprisingly, windows sound recorder records my voice crystal clear, just like audacity did on my old computer. so the problem is with audacity. i tried uninstalling and going back to 1.3.11 like i have on my old computer (running vista) but its still muffled on this computer (win 7).. so idk whats going on lol, i can record fine in sound recorder, so the problem lies within audacity. what should i do? thanks!

1) Update to Audacity 1.3.12 (it contains a couple of important bug fixes)
2) "Edit menu > Preferences > Devices" and set the Recording and Playback devices to "Microsoft Sound Mapper".

Upgraded and it still diddnt work.
Under playback i have: Primary sound driver
speakers (realtek high definition audio)
under recording i have: Primary sound capture driver
Microphone (realtek high definition audio)
` Stereo Mix (realtek high definition audio)
idk whats going on. It works fine on my other laptop, but recording on that laptop is highly inconvenient now, and this laptop records sound perfectly clear on other recorders, but not on audacity. AND I WANT MY AUDACITY BACK DAMNIT!!!

Im going crazy without it haha. I dont like pro tools or cool edit, audacity is my favorite. Its free, simple, and easy.

Get rid of Stereo Mix. That's the setting you need to record YouTube, but it's death on live, real-time recording.

dosent matter, its muffled which ever way i have the settings. And its really aggravating me because my mic is clear with any other program except audacity. Its clear in pro-tools And cool edit, but i audacity more, and want to continue using audacity. It just sounds like im recording on a crappy mic thats really muffled. idk why its doing it. i tryed every setting.

What sort of microphone are you using and how is it attached to the computer?

I have a Quantum FX headset. The vocals were really clear and the mic sounded amazing when i used it with audacity on my other laptop. It also sounds real clear when using pro-tools too. It plugs in thru the mic jack on my computer. Today i just bought another gaming headset mic that plugs in the same way, and its still muffled to hell and back. But when i open up pro tools, cool edit, or cakewalk, its clear. And another one i have is a first act mic. Its a real mic with a usb adapter (real mic as in it has the 3 prongs and is suppost to connect to a mixxer, not plug into a standard computer mic jack). Works great on the other laptop and my other programs, but not with audacity. Im really bummed out, because i got this laptop but i have to keep using my old one if i want to record
