For some reason the "lame_enc.dll file seems to be missing . . . This program can't do me any good unless I can export the files to mp3, or wav, or the like. What am I missing?

Re: lame_enc.dll
Steve, it looks like the sourceforge link is a 3.97 version while other sites claim to have a 3.98 or later.
Other versions somehow bogus? Or???
Which also leads me to ask, I'm still using the 1.2.x stable Windows build and that only appears to support CBR encoding. Is VBR supported in the beta?
Or am I better off (in terms of sound quality or artifacts) saving as lossless WAV and then letting something like dbpoweramp make the VBR MP3 version for me? (I keep WAV for home, MP3 for the phone, which is good enough for when I'm on the road.)

Re: lame_enc.dll
Audacity 1.3.5 does support VNR BUT there is a problem with it in 1.3.5 (the format that you select is not always the format that you get).
It is always a good idea to keep a backup copy of your work as uncompressed WAV in case you ever want to do any more editing, or change the compression settings, or anything like that (decompressing and re-encoding MP3's always produces an increased loss of sound quality).
I export as 16 bit 44100 Hz WAV (perfect for burning to audio CD), then if I want an MP3 I use LameDrop (easy to use, excellent quality, does batches of files, and free).
I hear that dbpoweramp is also good, though I've not used it.

Re: lame_enc.dll
Thanks, I'll take a look at Lamedrop.
Meanwhile, dbpoweramp looks like a nice option. I'm not sure I'll buy it--but the batch converter will make short work out of everything I already have.<G> Without getting supercritical the "standard" VBR settings seem perfectly useful for mobile music, and way reduced in size.
