Lowering quality of music to save space question???
hi, I ripped a cd to my computer to make the songs into ringtones for my cellphone but cant seem to lower the kbps of the media to fit it on my phone. everything works out just fine untill i export the selection. i click on the media i edited and its quality is 10x kbps more than the origional. this would take up waaaay too much space in my phone. ive used the audacity program for at least 5 years now and it was always the 1.2 vrsions that were able to lower kbps directly. i got a new computer and its windows 7 so i have to use the new 1.3 beta version because the older one is not compatible. i fully understand the program but still cannot figure out how to lower the kbps to save my life. ive read thousands of forums and its really irritating me that i cant fix this problem!! if i lower the bit rate it makes the song sound terrible and the same goes for changing the Hz....... in the old version there was an option to lower the kbps...i cant seem to find one on the newer version. i also have the most recent vesion of the (lame) encoder if that helps any. if anybody could help me out i would GREATLY appreciate it. thanks

Audacity 1.3.12 takes care of all the Export File Management...at the export step.
The above illustration is from an Audacity where I installed both "lame" and "FFMpeg", so it will export music in many different file types and compressions. MP3, AAC, M4A, etc. What does your phone want?

The kbps is the bitrate and it always makes the song sound bad. Are you sure you weren't in one of the compressed formats like MP3? You don't say which file format you're using. Audacity defaults to WAV Perfect Quality (illustration) and that won't fit on any phone.if i lower the bit rate it makes the song sound terrible ....... in the old version there was an option to lower the kbps

my phone will accept mp3. which is what i export in...well maybe this new audicity is very confusing to me, but if you could let me know what i shuld set my settings at in order to be able to export the file at like 80-126 kbps because at that kbps they are good enought quality for a ringtone and they still sound good but i dont know what to set the Hz and bit ate at to do this.

If it's any consolation to you, Audacity 1.3 is the correct process. Audacity 1.2 was a too-simple, patch job.
