When I import a mp3 file it imports alright but when i press play it just makes a short high pitched sound. It happens to every song i try, i need help!!! So if it helps another problem is that the waveform display is very different to when i record sound or the waveforms i see on videos on youtube etc.
what is the problem?? can someone please help me?? I have a vista laptop as well!!! help

You are almost certainly not importing an MP3 file (they aren't iTunes/iPod AAC files by any chance?). Audacity behaves as you describe when you attempt to import a non-supported file type.
Audacity supports WAV,MP4, Ogg - and in 1.3 FLAC - you should find a software converter to convert your file to one of these formats before importing.
