Re: Problem with fade in effect.
You can get problems like this when you have DC offset on your sound. Root around through the effects (I'm not that familiar with 1.3) and look for "DC Elimination" or "DC Suppression" or something like that. Apply that to your whole show and then try applying the fade again. I had this problem with with putting a short stretch of silence into my show. It popped. Twice. I blew up the point where it popped and saw the DC level.
Audio systems are not supposed to carry data down to DC. It's clearly not sound down that far, but I think we're seeing the engineering background of Audacity. A case can be made that a system performance like that can sound better. As a practical matter, it gets in the way more often than not.

Re: Problem with fade in effect.
Actually, it's the "Cross Fade In" that creates the popping. The regular "Fade In" works fine.

Re: Problem with fade in effect.
In earlier Audacity, it's Effect > Normalize. Unclick Normalize and click Remove DC Offset.
Of course, if you want to actually normalize as well, so much the better. Check them both.

Re: Problem with fade in effect.
It's in teh same place in 1.3 too.
And there are known bugs with the cross-fade effects - which is why I gave up on using them a while ago- the normal fade-in/out seem to work consistently well enev if they are somewaht limited in functionality (BTW you could try the Envelope tool for greater flexibility).
