When on audacity and it has the two tracks (lines) on the main page, how do you edit just one of those tracks?

On the track menu (to the left of the waveform) click the down arrow to the right of the track name and select "Split Stereo Track". You now have two independent tracks you can edit individually.

And after you have split the tracks and done your editing you can reform them into a stereo pair by clicking on the little down arrow to the right of the trackname in the topmost of the two tracks.

I tried doing that, I cliked on the arrow and I split the tracks, but when I go to highlight something say in the top one it highlights it also in the bottom one. So now what would you do?

How do you highlight?
Shift+mouseclick behaves similar to what you say. Use mouse click-and-drag without Shift/Ctrl/Alt.

If this does not help, create three or four tracks to experiment.
(For example Click Record Stop several times to create new tracks).
Can you edit one of four tracks?

The way I have been highlighting is just holding the mouse down and scrolling it over and then letting go. Ok yeah now it works.

Thank all you guys so much.

Its greatly appreciated :]
