stuttering effect

Post by likwit » Thu May 22, 2008 6:54 pm

While i'm converting LP's to MP3 there seems to be some strange stuttering/popping going on in the playback while recording. When I check the recorded sounds just in playback, everthing is fine (MP3's are also fine). So it's not such a big problem but it's very weird.

I have the same problem. The actual recorded wav or mp3 files are fine but I like to listen to the vinyl while recording it and the pops and clicks sound like all my vinyl are in a bad state.

I have tried the new audacity version, modified sample rates etc... and still get it.

I'm running Windows XP on a HP media centre PC with a Audigy soundcard and a Soundlab USB turntable.

One thing I can't find on the audacity options on 1.3.5 is the option for hardware playthrough. This seems to have fixed it for others but is not to be seen on my version of audacity. Is this a Mac only version ?

Hope someone can help.

Go to Edit>Preferences>Audio I/O to get these options

I have my Software Playthrough checked On for recording from my TT and it works fine

Actually i you are using a USB TT then you will not be using theudigy soundcard in your PC for recording (unless, that is, you are using analog outputs from the TT. It you are using the USB to connect then there will be anon onboard ADC/soundcard in the Soundlab TT - that is the whole point of USB TTs.

I would recommend sticking with 1.3.5 (actually 1.3.6 is due to be released very soon) it is now a very solid version, in spite of being a pre-release beta.

I would recommend that you make your settings 44.1kHz 16-bit stereo (this is the Red Book standard for CDs and is a good setting for exporting WAVs to make CDS and MP3s for am MP3 player).

You can find out easily if your vinyl really is in bad shape just by playing it on another player - if you are actually getting the interruptions in the Audacity recording - try stopping all background tasks, particularly virus checkers - or try setting your virus checker to ignore Audacity's files: *.aup and *.au
