Error Importing
Hello!
I am a new user of audacity, and I have downloaded it for the express purpose of editing several WMA files from a digital voice recorder for a school project (The recorder is an Olympus VN-6200 PC). The files I am trying to edit work on Windows Media Player, but when I try to open them using Audacity this message appears;
Error Importing
Audacity recognized the type of the file 'C:Usersblahblahblah
Importers supposedly supporting such files are:
FFmpeg-compatible files,
but none of them understood this file format.
What do I do?
Thank you, Ryan

Re: Error Importing
You need to use a converter that understands the format from your Olympus VN-6200 PC to convert them into a supported file type such as WAV. You can then import the WAV files into Audacity.
You're not the first person to have problems with files from an Olympus recorder - it seems that they regularly use strange formats that few programs can convert. I've done a quick search of the forum but not found a definitive answer. I think your best bet might be to try converting them with the free conversion program "SUPER" by erightsoft.

Re: Error Importing
Have you been able to convert the files from your Olympus VN-6200 PC?
I'm sure it will be useful for other users if you can give at least a brief account of how you did so.

Re: Error Importing
According to the Olympus website, the VN-6200 PC records in WMA format.
Audacity 1.3 will recognise WMA if the FFMpeg library is installed. The instructions to download and install FFMpeg are here:

Re: Error Importing
Looks like FFMpeg (library) does not like any Olympus WMA files.
WMA should be WMA. If Windows Player recognizes it, it should be valid.
"SUPER" from 2007 is not free anymore.
Is there any other FREE conversion programs out there ?

"SUPER" is still free if you download it from the official web site http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.htmlSR-71 wrote:"SUPER" from 2007 is not free anymore.
Unfortunately there are different versions of WMA. FFmpeg in Audacity supports WMA version 2 for Export and may support some other versions for Import, but probably does not currently support all versions of WMA.SR-71 wrote:WMA should be WMA

WMA DSS codec
I believe this is documented in the following ffmpeg (i.e. libavcodec) bug:

It's actually classed as a "wish" rather than a bug, which clarifies the point that DSS is not currently supported by FFmpeg.
DSS, also known as the 'Digital Speech Standard' is an
audio standard for speech recordings. It is a format
specifically designed for speech in the same way MP3 is
for music. It is used in Olympus and Philips audio /
speech recorders. I would like to be able to convert
these through ffmpeg.
