Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Headset Died

Post by mschorr » Thu Nov 11, 2010 9:13 pm

Upgraded PC to Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. Using version 1.3 and Edirol USB Audiocapture. Now when I play back recording, it comes through PC speakers, not headphones. I have tried all 3 Playback preferences to no avail. Headset responded normally before upgrade. Is there a setting I'm missing? Please advise.

That's a little odd. The sound normally switches automatically from speakers to headphones when you plug the headphones in. It's not a software kind of thing -- unless the speakers or headphones are a little wacky.

I couldn't follow all of that post. What kind of speakers and exactly how are they connected, and to what kind of computer? Where are you plugging your headphones in and are you absolutely sure they're plugged all the way in and the plug is clean? Take a napkin or paper towel and a little glass cleaner, alcohol or vodka and scrub the headphone plug and dry it.

The computer is an HP Pavilion desktop. The speakers are standard computer speakers, connected to the speaker jacks on the HP. The headphones are plugged into the Phones/Output jack on the Edirol AudioCapture. Everything worked as you described under Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit prior to the upgrade to Windows 7 and the update of Audacity, first to version 1.2, then to 1.3. I'll try your suggestion re cleaning the headphone jack, but it seems to me that, if that's the problem, I'd get no sound, rather than having it directed to the computer speakers.

It is kind of spooky, isn't it?

Thanks for responding so quickly.

Not at all. The computer can't "tell" what's going on because the drivers for your Edirol AudioCapture aren't up to the job. Download new drivers if possible. If you were on a laptop and plugged your headphones into the headphone jack, the computer would know to turn off the built-in speakers. You are using two different hardware devices which were speaking to each other on your old machine, but no longer.

It's a common problem with newer operating systems that it takes a while for the customization and driver software to catch up. Visit the Edirol site.

I thought that was so obvious, I should have thought of it myself. Unfortunately, when I installed the updated driver for Windows 7 64-bit it still failed to send the sound to my headphones. So, I am once again at a loss. Any further suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Aha! After the driver update, a new selection appeared under Edit Preferences and that solved the issue. Many thanks.
