File inaudible in Audacity, fine in Windows Media Player

I have some MP3 files of interviews I've conducted which I'm trying to snip bits out of for a presentation. When I click on them and play in Windows Media Player, they're fine (not great audio quality, but entirely audible). When I open them in Audacity and hit play, the little green Left/Right volume bar flickers normally, but I can't hear a thing. Amplify doesn't do anything.

Even weirder, I could hear one of the same files just fine in Audacity earlier today. No, I haven't changed my headset, volume settings, or anything else between now and then.

You will need to describe your set-up.
Which version of Windows?
How are your speakers/headphones connected?
Any other audio devices connected?
Any other audio programs open?
Did you record the MP3s or download them?
What settings do you have in "Edit menu > Preferences > Devices"?
What other options are available in "Edit menu > Preferences > Devices"?
Any other details that may be relevant?
