We had used Audacity in the past and had great success. But not this time. I am trying to record a live practice session. I have a mackie board that I am using an aux out channel to a line in channel on a laptop. It appears to record well, no clipping, good signals but when I try to play back its starts out good then a couple seconds into it it turns to a digitized garble???? I have checked many posts and tried different settings but nothing seems too work. PLEASE help

I presume that you can play "ordinary" audio files without them turning into "digitized garble"?
What happens if you export the recording as a WAV file and play the file with your usual media player?
What happens if you import a known good audio file into Audacity and play it in Audacity?

<<<aux out channel to a line in channel on a laptop.>>>
Does it say
specifically Stereo Line-In on the laptop, or are you assuming it's Line-In because it's the only connector there? It's very typical that the only sound connection on a Windows laptop is for a mono microphone, not stereo production.
It's also very normal that Windows comes out of the box set for corporate conferencing, not quality music recording. Scroll down a bit in this post.

If you offended a god or two, you may need to buy a small Stereo USB sound card to do what you want like the UCA-202.

I think you're watching your echo cancellation and volume management kicking in and Steve thinks you have an internal sound management problem.
Let's see who's right.
