I had changed the default metadata when I was exporting lots of a certain type of file.
Seemed to be a useful feature, now I can't set the default as anything else.
I have changed the metadata and saved the Template (as xml) and then clicked Set Default. but the old default metadata keeps coming up.
any ideas? perhaps a bug?

Re: metadata - can't set default after setting it once befor
I can't reproduce this on 1.3.12.
Steps
Start Audacity
File > Open Metadata Editor
- enter some tags -
Save - name template
Set Default
OK
Quit Audacity
Start Audacity
File > Open Metadata Editor
- previous defaults show up -
- enter some new tags
Save - with a new name for the template
Set Default
OK
Quit Audacity
Start Audacity
File > Open Metadata Editor
- the "new" default tags are in the editor
Note that if you import an MP3 file, the tags from that file will override the defaults in the metadata editor. Perhaps this is what is happening?

Re: metadata - can't set default after setting it once befor
thanks for the quick reply.
That worked fine for me, FWIW the problem was that it wouldn't save the Set Default in the dialog that pops up when you choose Export Multiple.
thanks for the help again.
one other quick thing. It doesn't seem to be saving the comment field text. When I open it in Media Monkey the comment section is empty.

Ahhh. Yes, that is a problem. You had the Metatdata editor popping up for each file during Export Multiple. I just tried this and, yes, it doesn't seem to be picking up the new defaults for subsequent files. And clicking "Set Default" doesn't seem to cause the defaults to be written if you do it during Export Multiple. I will ask about this.edzillion wrote:FWIW the problem was that it wouldn't save the Set Default in the dialog that pops up when you choose Export Multiple
I'll look into that too, but as I recall this is a known limitation in Audacity.edzillion wrote:It doesn't seem to be saving the comment field text. When I open it in Media Monkey the comment section is empty.

Re: metadata - can't set default after setting it once befor
More information.
The "Set Default" button sets what is to be displayed in the Metadata Editor when it would normally display nothing. This would be the case for a project that never had tagged files imported into it, and where the user had never gone to File > Open Metatdata Editor and entered something into it.
That said, the fact that the Metadata Editor behaves differently during Export Multiple than it does when opened with File > Open Metadata Editor may be an issue. As I noted in my first post to this thread, if you do File > Open Metadata Editor and edit the tags, that information will be displayed during Export Multiple. The question is, when you change some of the tags during Export Multiple, why don't those changes show up for subsequent files in the Export Multiple process? I've asked this question on the Audacity Quality mailing list, and I'll let you know what the experts say.

Re: metadata - can't set default after setting it once befor
I just tried this, exporting multiple MP3 files from Audacity with text in the comment ID3 tag. When I opened those files in QuickTime Player the comment tag was there. So I don't know what's happening in your case. And I was obviously wrong about this being a know issuebillw58 wrote:I'll look into that too, but as I recall this is a known limitation in Audacity.edzillion wrote:It doesn't seem to be saving the comment field text. No I think you were probably right, just missing some details.billw58 wrote:And I was obviously wrong about this being a know issue
I'm not sure about Media Monkey (I don't use it) but it is a known issue that not all fields are supported by all programs. Many programs do not show the comment field, and some (can't remember which) label the comment field as something entirely different. The know "issue" is that Metadata (even if specifically id3 version 2.3) is not a real "standard" and nearly every player has its own variation - it's what is called an "informal standard". http://www.id3.org/id3v2.3.0
