I keep getting error message to check input device settings & project sample rate. I was able to record yesterday, but today I keep getting this message. What do I need to do?

What were you recording?
What do you now want to record?
Which version of Windows?

I had a previous version of Audacity on Windows XP that recorded radio stations, streaming audio etc. from within the computer.
Just got a new computer with Windows 7, and this new Beta version will only record from an external source when the microphone (webcam) is plugged in. Otherwise I get this same error message, "check input device settings & project sample rate." Is there any way to record from the computer with this edition? Thanks.

Whether you can or not depends entirely on your PC, its soundcard and the associated drivers. May modern PCs seem to have this facility removed (presumably in a bid to thwart piracy).

Thanks. I'm not knowledgeable enough see what my computer offers. A little Roxio app records, but doesn't have Audacity's features.

Update--went to my Manage Audio Devices menu in Windows 7, and under Recording there was an option: Show Disabled Devices. The invisible device that appeared was just what I needed, so I enabled it. I'm up and running on the new computer with Audacity.

That did not work for me; the only devices were mic and line in. I have recorded with the previous version of Audacity on this same PC with XP on it, now I've got W7 and there is no selection of "Stereo mix" that enables me to record streaming audio. The dropdown box only displays "Master", next to the input level.
I have tried all? combinations of inputs to no avail.
Thankful for any advice.
