Sound recording level

Hi all,

First of all, sorry for my English, it's not my native tongue ;-).

I have a problem with the sound level since I use Audacity 1.3.7 and my new Windows 7 computer while or after recording a record from my USB turntable. I have enclosed a screen capture of the problem. It seems the sound level is "captured" on top and at the bottom while being too loud while playing after the recording. Before - on my old PC - this 'capture' was not the case. Does anyone know what the problem is?

PS I have lowered the entrance volume in Audacity a little, but the 'captured' lines still exists. Help!

Try reducing the recording level a lot.

I've run into this same problem. Audacity meters peg out and recording is distorted when I record from my USB turntable.
Here is what I've noticed. I can got to the Windows Sound device I notice the meter there is also pegged out (maxed out) I then reset the divice to default settings and it then shows the proper levels. I can then record in Audacity with proper levels. As soon as I click the OK button on the Windows 7 sound device then restart Audacity and start recording the levels are maxed out.

I tried just adjusting the recold volume on Audacity to a very low setting but I hear the distortion on playback. I tried stereo/mono and several other settings. I notice once I change the settings in Windows Sound Device I can get things working properly and they continue to work properly until I shut down that window and start another Audacity. As long as I leave that window up I can start and stop Audacity over and over and continue to record. Once the window is closed (dialog box with the settings for the sound device) the trouble occurs.

Could this possile be a driver issue? I have uninstalled Audacity and even tried the 1.2.6 version.

@both: You should be using the latest Beta 1.3.12 with W7 - you can get it from here: http://audacityteam.org/download/

@alsmith: see this article from the Wiki: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/USB_turntables

I am using Audacity 1.3.12-Beta (Unicode) on the laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium. (actually working with 2 different laptops to try to isolate the issue, I connected his turntable to my Toshiba and then installed Audacity also)

I can adjust the volume on the Meter Toolbar, I have to set it near 0.1 then on the Audio track Controla also set it to about -18db to get a decent level of recording. This only occurs once I close the diaglog box that controls the sound -> Recording in the Control panel -> Manage Audio devices.

In the Control->panel->Sound->Manage audio devices (with the USB ION turntable connected) I can select the Recording tab in the dialog box. There I see a USB Audio CODEC devise. I can highlight that one and select properties go to the Advanced tab on the next dialog box and select Restor Defaults (or make any change) Select Apply then OK at the bottom. If I go straight from here open Audacity leave that Sound diaglog box open then try to record with Audacity I see the Mixer record volume maxed to the right, put a record on and select the record button, Audacity records beautifully and I notice also in my Sound dialog window the meter showing just a few bars of recording level.

Now I click the OK button on the Sound dialog box, try to record with Audacity and the sound levels are maxed out again, I open the Sound dialog box go to the recording tab and also see the meter maxed out.

This USB ION turntable does not have volume control. It works beautifully on my other Windows XP box with Audacity and works beautifully on either of the laptops once I make the adjustment to the Sound->Recording settings in windows 7 and LEAVE the dialog window open. It only maxes out the input level once I close it then try with Audacity.

Also as a note in the Windows 7 Sound->Recording0>Advance Ive tried unchecking the Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device and Give exclusive mode applications priority. Neither seem to help.

I also tried (just for trying sakes) to set the Compatibility moe to XP and even Vista and that made no difference.
