MP3 exporting and loss of metatag information

I heavily tag mp3 clips with iTunes and MP3Tag. After tagging the files I may modify the files using audacity and then export them as MP3.

Sometime I let the export overwrite the original file name. At other times I rename the exported files.

When I overwrite the original file name, many of the tags in the original file are kept, but apparently not all.
When I rename the file, all ( or maybe almost all ) the tags are deleted.

Is there anyway I can keep the tags from the original file intact without having to reenter them again?

Is there any information I can get on which tags get kept when I overwrite the original file?

Thanks in advance!

We're no longer developing 1.2.x or monitoring any bugs in it (or any incompatibilities with particular versions of the LAME MP3 Encoder).

Please upgrade to 1.3.12, obtain the LAME 3.98.2 encoder from ourselves, then post any problems you still get in 1.3.12.

Note that Windows Explorer/Media Player cannot see the Comments tag exported by 1.3.12.

Thanks
