just getting started...

so i have this old mic that plugs right into the back of my computer...and i tried recording with it on this software but nothing happens...any ideas?

Could be anything - I suggest you try and narrow it down a bit.

the mic is plugged right into the tower of the computer, and when i hit record there is some static-y noise and that noise stops when i turn the mic off...so the computer definitley recognizes that the mic is plugged in...but when i record it doesnt pick up any sound

The most obvious thing is that the microphone is bust - can you test it, or try another microphone?
