ipod does not recognise track numbers exported from 1.3.12?

I have

been digitising my vynyl useing audacity 1.2 to clean up the recordings and split them (using silence) and then labeling them and exporting in AIFF(export multiple) into itunes, where I then numbered them. Recently I downloaded 1.3.12 which when exporting multiple numbers the tracks for you. However when I try to play on ipod(Classic) it randomly wanders between tracks (will not play the selected track) as though it does not recognise the track number(which is there). The ipod has also crashed requiring resetting. I am running Windows XP and itunes is 10.0.1. Help please!

Can you give an example of a numbered track name from 1.2 that works with your iPod and one from 1.3.12 that doesn't?

You don't have to use numbers in the file names in 1.3.12; just put some text in the labels and select the "Using Label/Track Name" radio button when you export multiple. If you select either of the "Numbering..." radio buttons the numbers will be two digit, starting with 01.

Thanks for your relpy,
For a while now I have only been putting the song name in the label in 1.2 and then numbering the tracks in the itunes get info screen(ie;1 of 10 tracks and so on). If the track number was included in front of the song name it was being duplicated(ie; 01 01 01 01 track name) when the ipod was synced. Hope this answers your question.

Re my previous posts, nothing has changed!!! if I export muliple tracks from 1.3.12 in AIFF format then when I try to play on my ipod classic it will play some individual tracks or will wander randomly from track to track(very quickly) and eventually the ipod will crash requiring the reset reccomended in apples help page. this does not happen if I export the files in WAV, the ipod will play wav files quite happily but I have now discovered that music files in this format will not accept artwork---hence why I wish to know why I am having this problem!! I think 1.3.12 is much better than 1.2!!! I am willing to supply a file I have worked in 1.3.12 and have tried to export in AIFF fotmatt or the files themselves.

As an experiment, could you try exporting some tracks from Audacity as WAV files, then use iTunes to convert them to AIFF. Do you still get the problem?

Thanks for your reply. Yes that works fine. Also I have exported tracks in AIFF and converted to AIFF them using I tunes although one album I had to do twice!
Some observations ;-
1. Whilst I originally had this problem in 1.3.12 I had the same problem with an old file I had been working on in 1.2
2.Some tracks exported straight out of Audacity play OK.
3. On one album I had only one track that would'nt play. I converted it using I tunes and it still would not play. I then converted the track before it and it played OK!
4.This particular track also played in I tunes before conversion and "syncing" with the ipod
5. I checked the label in between these two tracks in Audacity and it seemed normal.

Hope this makes makes sense I shall in future probably export in WAV and convert to AIFF in I tunes.
Once again I think Audacity is really good and has enabled me to recover tracks that had bad scratches, etc

It's a while since I posted my reply to you was it helpful? Do you have any further thoughts on why I cannot export files in AIFF straight out of Audacity that will play in itunes? Is it some thing to do with the way I am naming the files? or how I edit them? I would be grateful for an acknowledgemeent to my posts please.

Hi Dave,

No I've not really got any more clue about this than you have.
I've heard that some versions of iTunes support 48 kHz files and some have problems. As far as I'm aware iTunes does not support 32-bit files, but I could be wrong on that.
I don't use iTunes as I think it's a bloated monstrosity that's almost as bad as Windows Media Player, but that's just my opinion and I don't have an iPod
Apple like you to use Apple, so if using an iPod you will probably be best to use iTunes, convert to AIFF in iTunes, buy your music from iTunes (and run it on an iMac).

(Off topic, but it amazed me to discover that despite it's bulk, iTunes was not able to copy files from an iPod onto a computer - so how are you supposed to back up your 40000 songs?)

As far as I'm aware iTunes does not support 32-bit files, but I could be wrong on that.

Recent versions of iTunes do support 32-bit, but AFAIK iPod does not. You should export AIFF as 16-bit, with the project rate bottom left set to 44100 Hz, and make sure you have the latest iTunes.

Are you running iPod on battery? I've seen many reports that iPods on battery can be very finnicky with files not created by iTunes. I doubt the method of specific track numbering in Audacity really has anything to do with it.

Also see http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic ... 71#p126595 - there is a suggestion there that you have to have the sync cable connected before the iPod will play AIFFs exported by Audacity. And another suggestion that Audacity-exported AIFFs play OK on iPod if they do not have metadata. I think it all boils down to the same thing - the slightest extra file reading or detection effort creates problems when playing AIFFs on iPod running on battery.

Also note that iPod Shuffle doesn't support AIFFs at all: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2565.

That's a very old piece of information now, but I don't think it says you can't copy files from iPod to computer, just that they appear as hidden files to the computer.
